Morland Mews

London N1

Transforming undercroft garages into new homes and improving the streetscene and safety of Barnsbury Housing Association’s estate at Morland Mews.

Barnsbury Housing Association has appointed us to transform undercroft garage spaces into airy new dwellings on its iconic 1970s housing estate at Morland Mews in Islington.

Morland Mews is part of the Barnsbury Housing Association’s Barnsbury Mews scheme. Funded by the Greater London Council, the development was built in 1972 and the first of its 56 homes occupied in 1975. It nestles among the grand terraced houses and stuccoed villas of surrounding Barnsbury, its high-quality yellow brick and carefully detailed concrete sills and lintels giving a robust feel that will set the tone for the new proposals.

Our design replaces rows of blank garage doors with activated ground floor façades that will add visual interest and create a friendlier and more social atmosphere in the street. The proposals improve safety and security more generally within the estate, through natural surveillance, while privacy for the new homes will be enhanced by front area walls and well-considered planting.
